The Steps community workgroup is facilitated by Judy Preston of Chelan Douglas County Health District and is comprised of representatives from local agencies or organizations, as well as individuals who are interested in the health and wellbeing of our community.

The responsibilities of the community workgroup include providing direction for Steps efforts in the community such as a diabetes risk assessment survey and walking programs. They are also responsible for the media and communications component for the overall Steps project. Long term efforts will focus on policy change and built environment initiatives.

Projects in each of our main focus areas are in various stages of development and implementation, including:


Nutrition/Obesity/Physical Activity:

• The Walking to Wellness program - to increase activity and develop life-long habits was implemented originally in Waterville and is being replicated this year in the following communities:

Orondo in Spanish,

Leavenworth and Cashmere in Spanish,

Chelan and Manson in Spanish,

Entiat in English,

Manson in English,

and East Wenatchee in English.

Asthma/Tobacco:
• The Master Home Environmentalist program has been implemented to improve indoor air quality for asthmatics in the community. This program assists families to identify potential hazards and solutions to reduce or eliminate these hazards at low or no cost.
