Wenatchee Valley Medical Center Stairway Mural

Art students from Eastmont High School, Wenatchee High School, and Wenatchee Valley College painted murals in the stairwells of Wenatchee Valley Medical Center. The Healthy Steps Mural project was coordinated by Eastmont art instructor Terry Valdez, Wenatchee visual arts instructor Mike McClun and Wenatchee Valley College instructor Scott Bailey.  Four students from each high school participated as well as two students from the Wenatchee Valley Community College.

The purpose of the art is to promote a healthier lifestyle at the workplace.  The scenes depict people engaged in different types of physical activity such as jogging, biking, swimming, rock climbing, as well as other activities.  There are four murals, one per floor. Each mural depicts a different season of the year and displays appropriate activities for that season.

Dr. Richard Tucker, Director of WVMC's Quality and Education program, came up with the idea. The funds came from the Steps program at the Chelan Douglas County Health District. The project was a collaborative venture between WVMC and the health district. The goal is to encourage employees to use the stairs. Not only does that free up the elevators for patient use, but it is also great exercise for employees.

The students received a DVD of the project to put in their portfolios as well as a $200 gift certificate to an art store.  The next time you are at the clinic, be sure to take the stairs and so you can enjoy the beautiful murals.
