Steps Grant Focus Areas

soccerThe U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded Chelan-Douglas and Okanogan counties with a grant called Steps to a HealthierUS to fight chronic disease. This program targets asthma, diabetes, obesity, and tobacco use because of the ability to prevent and or reduce the complications, through exercise, diet and other strategies. The Steps initiative is committed to helping our local residents live longer, stronger and healthier lives.

Asthma:
Reduce the burden of asthma in the community and school system by reducing the complications of asthma.

Diabetes:

  • preventing diabetes among populations with pre-diabetes
  • increasing the likelihood that people with undiagnosed diabetes are diagnosed
  • reducing the complications of diabetes

Nutrition, Obesity and Physical Activity:
Reducing overweight and obesity by improving food choices, nutritional awareness and by promoting physical activity.

Tobacco:
Prevent tobacco use or encourage cessation efforts to:

  • reduce the complications of asthma
  • reduce the complications of diabetes

Intervention systems that the leadership teams will be targeting are: schools, communities, worksite and healthcare settings. Workgroups are organized around each of these intervention systems.
